First Baptist Church Hinesville History
First Baptist Church Hinesville was organized in 1937. On January 23, 1938, the first Sunday School was started in the home of the first Pastor, Rev. C.L. Phillips. The early congregation wasted no time in planning the first church building. The first worship center was built in 1942 on the corner of what was then George Washington Avenue and Bradwell Street. The cost of the facility, equipment, and furnishings was approximately $20,000.
During the 1940's and 1950's, continued growth created the need for additional educational classrooms; in total, six classrooms, two assembly rooms, and the purchase of a pastorium were added.
Due to the increasing size of the community and the church, in the 1960's and 1970's, continuous building and remodeling became a necessity. In 1962, a new educational building was constructed followed by the second worship center in 1971. This larger worship center was constructed on the original site at a cost of $145,000.
The 1980's and 1990's brought even more growth and prosperity. In 1981, at a cost of $317,000, the church embarked on another building program that was designed to update, and connect the improved education complex with the second worship center. This building was formally dedicated on March 7, 1982.
In 1994, the vestibule was renovated and existing windows were replaced by stained glass. In addition, a shelter was built for the new church bus. Then on December 14, 1994, at the annual church dinner, the newly renovated social hall was dedicated and named in memory of Emma Kate Bacon.
In July 1997, the debt was retired and the congregation celebrated with a note-burning ceremony.
The 2000's brought a need for further expansion and on April 6, 2003, the ground was broken a third time on a new worship center.
Our third worship center was completed on January 26, 2004. This spacious new complex is equipped with an up-to-date choir suite, a state-of-the-art sound and lighting system, and a cry room with viewing of worship services available via CCTV. Construction of the new facility has also provided the church staff with a new spacious office suite, additional classrooms for Sunday School, and the re-paving and expansion of the church parking lot. God has truly equipped us for His special purposes!
Between 2005-2006, the addition of a new state-of-the-art commercial kitchen was completed and the old worship center was converted into our new social hall.
In late 2007, transformation of the old social hall and kitchen into a nursery began and in 2008 the new nursery wing was complete. We are grateful to have a nursery worthy of all His precious children placed in our care.
Today, the ministry and facilities at First Baptist Church Hinesville continue to grow and expand, but one thing remains constant; First Baptist Church Hinesville is committed to spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ and resting on the fact that He is faithful and true.
May we sing a song of thankfulness to God, for present and former pastors, deacons, and leaders who have shaped the ministry of our church. First Baptist Church Hinesville, Existing to Glorify the Lord.
